About
Context - The Togolese challenge
Togo is facing an environmental emergency that threatens its sustainable development and the security of its populations:
- Massive deforestation : 43,6% of forests lost since 1990. Current rate : 1,44%/year. Remaining forest cover : 32% of the national territory.
- Critical coastal erosion : 1,8 meter per year on average, directly threatening port infrastructures and coastal communities.
- Plastic pollution : more than 2 million plastic bags discarded daily, polluting waterways, coasts and marine biodiversity.
- Climate displacement : more than 74 000 internal displacements caused by climate disasters between 2008 and 2023.
Paradoxically, Togo has considerable economic potential. The blue economy represents more than 70% of the country's economic activities and generates more than 75% of its tax revenues. The Autonomous Port of Lomé, handling 1,96 million TEU containers in 2022, is a strategic regional hub in West Africa.
